Today I read an interesting article in the New York Times, Fruits of the Loom, which has both a brief synopsis of the textile industry in America and some interviews and photos of some spinning and weaving mills that are currently operating. Sadly, most American mills have shut down as operations have been moved overseas to take advantage of cheaper labor. I am starting to see signs, though, of a growing consciousness of both the true costs of that cheap labor and the magnitude of what we have lost by not making things ourselves.
Take a look at the article and scroll through the photos, and take a moment to think about our textile heritage.
